Cozie Coaster

I first saw this felt coaster idea on Pinterest which took me to an Etsy link of someone selling them. And they were sold out. So, I created mine to go with my 'fancy' holiday goblets that I made. The goblets are a separate post on 11/6/11. Supplies Needed One felt rectangle per coaster. Sewing Machine & Thread Circle template from a glass, lid, etc. I first cut a large felt circle that was bigger than the base of my goblet and giving me a 1/4" seam allowance. The diameter of my base circle in 4 3/4". .
I then cut 5 smaller circles with a diameter of 2 3/4". There wasn't a great mathematical calculation. I just looked for circular items around the house to give me what I thought would look good.
For the sake of photos and to visually describe what I did, I layered the red large circle with the white smaller circles. However, my final project was all red. Once everything was cut out, I layered the 5 small circles on top of the red circle. With the smaller circles hanging over the edge of the larger one, knowing they would be trimmed down. Sorry it is kind of blurry.
I then pinned them together and sewed them, using my presser foot as a guide for my seam allowance.
When I sewed the circles together, I had the larger circle on top in order to use it as a guide for my seam. I also chose to use a contrasting thread because I liked the look. Once all the smaller circles were sewn onto the larger circle, I trimmed the access off.
I am really pleased with the finished look. And it really didn't take long to make.

  1. I think this is adorable, but does it keep the condensation from soaking through to underlying wood?
